The folding lock exists to solve a real annoyance: a U-lock is secure but rigid and short on reach, and a chain has reach but is heavy and awkward to carry. A folding lock is a string of hardened steel bars linked by rivets that folds flat into a frame case and opens out to wrap around posts and racks a U can’t reach. You get most of a U-lock’s deterrence with a chain’s flexibility, in a package that rides on your bike instead of your back.

The honest catch is the rivets. Those pivot points are the weak link — a folding lock isn’t as attack-resistant as a solid hardened U-lock of the same weight, and the good ones cost more than a basic U. Where a folding lock fits — and where it doesn’t

Think of a folding lock as the versatile middle option. It carries far better than a chain, reaches far better than a U-lock, and rates well above any cable. For a commuter locking to varied racks in a moderate-risk area — and who’s tired of hunting for a post skinny enough for a mini U-lock — it’s often the most practical lock to actually use every day, which is what real security comes down to. The best-carrying lock is the one you don’t leave at home.

Where it doesn’t fit is the high-security end. If you park a valuable bike outdoors for long stretches, the riveted joints put a folding lock a tier below a hardened U-lock or a heavy chain, and you should buy up. Whatever you carry, technique still decides half your security — lock the frame and a wheel to something solid and immovable, as covered in preventing bike theft.
