How to buy a budget e-bike without regret

The failure mode with a cheap e-bike isn’t the motor — it’s the parts around it. Cheaper bikes ship with mechanical disc brakes that need adjusting, spoke tension that settles in the first month, and bolts that want a check-over before you trust them at speed. None of that is a dealbreaker; it just means a budget e-bike rewards a $50–$80 assembly-and-tune at a local shop far more than a premium bike does. Do that once and a sub-$1,000 commuter can run reliably for years.

Ignore “peak watts” as a headline — it’s a burst figure, not sustained output. If your route has real hills, read our watts and torque guide before you buy, because that’s where budget bikes vary most. And match the frame to your body and your commute: a step-through is far easier to mount in work clothes, while a folder earns its keep if you store the bike indoors or combine it with transit.

How long do budget e-bike batteries last?

Most use lithium-ion packs rated for several hundred charge cycles before capacity noticeably drops — a few years of daily commuting. Charge indoors, avoid leaving it fully drained, and store it cool. Range at year three will be lower than day one; that's normal for any lithium battery.

Do I need a special lock for a budget e-bike?
