How Bike Thieves Actually Break Locks
Five attacks account for almost every stolen bike. Knowing which one your lock is weak to is how you stop buying the wrong lock - and how you park to beat it.
Most bike-lock advice tells you to buy a stronger lock without ever saying what “stronger” is measured against. It matters, because locks aren’t strong or weak in general — they’re strong against some attacks and weak against others, and the attack that takes your bike depends on where you park it and who’s working that area. A lock that laughs off bolt cutters can be undone by leverage. A lock that resists leverage can have a cylinder a determined thief opens quietly. Understanding the handful of attacks that account for nearly all bike theft is what turns “buy a good lock” into a decision you can actually make.
This is a defensive guide, so it stays at the level a buyer needs: what each attack beats, what it costs the thief in time and noise, and what answers it. The one thing every attack has in common is the currency it runs on — time. A thief in a public place is trading minutes of exposure against the value of your bike, and every choice below either buys you minutes or gives them away for free.
1. Bolt cutters — the everyday attack
Long-handled bolt cutters are the workhorse of bike theft. They’re cheap, silent, legal to own, and they go straight through braided cable, thin chain and any shackle slim enough to fit between the jaws. The whole attack takes a couple of seconds and looks, to a passer-by, like almost nothing.
What defeats them is diameter and hardness. Cutters need to get their jaws around the metal, so a thick hardened shackle is both too wide to bite and too hard to shear. This is the single clearest reason we say a cable lock is not a lock: not because cables are badly made, but because they present exactly the target a pair of snips is designed for. It’s also why chain thickness is quoted in millimeters on every serious listing — the number is a direct statement about this attack.
2. Leverage — the attack people never see coming
A U-lock is enormously strong in the direction it’s designed for, and much less so when a thief can lever the shackle apart from the inside. Any empty space within the loop is space for a tool to brace and push. A car bottle jack, a scaffold pole, a crowbar — all of them turn modest human strength into forces the lock was never meant to see, and they do it quietly.
The defense is free and structural: fill the shackle. Choose a lock size that’s only just big enough for the job, then pack it out with the frame, the rack and the rear wheel until there’s nothing left to insert a tool into. This is why mini U-locks are rated so well relative to their weight — a small loop simply has no room to attack. 3. Hacksaws and hand tools — the soft-metal test
A hacksaw is slow and obvious against hardened steel, and effective against anything soft. It’s the attack that separates a genuinely hardened lock from one that only looks the part, and it’s why the surface treatment and the steel matter as much as the thickness. The same category covers the improvised end — freezing sprays, hammers and general brute force. Against a rated hardened lock these mostly waste the thief’s time, which is the point. Against a no-name lock with no rating at all, you have no way to know, and that uncertainty is itself a reason to buy rated.
4. The angle grinder — the one that beats everything
A cordless angle grinder will eventually cut through any bike lock made. This is not a controversial claim; the good manufacturers say it themselves. What varies is how long it takes, how many discs it burns through, and how much noise, light and attention the attempt generates — and those variables are exactly what the top tier of locks is engineered around. Two practical consequences follow. First, if you park somewhere a grinder attack is plausible — a quiet street overnight, an unwatched station rack — the lock tier is worth paying for, and so is a second lock of a different type, because two cuts take twice as long. Second, and more importantly, you cannot buy your way out of this attack, so parking choice does more than the lock does. Somewhere overlooked, busy and preferably covered by cameras changes the risk far more than another few millimeters of steel. 5. The cylinder — the quiet way in
Every attack above is loud and visible. Defeating the lock’s cylinder isn’t, which is why it’s the one that leaves owners staring at an empty rack with no cut lock to explain it. Cheap locks with simple wafer cylinders are the vulnerable ones; quality locks fit disc-detainer or pick-resistant cylinders, and the difference is a genuine reason to buy a known brand over an unrated one. You can’t inspect a cylinder in a listing photo, so this is a case where brand reputation and an independent rating are doing real work on your behalf.
The attacks that skip the lock entirely
Two of the most common losses aren’t lock defeats at all, and both are completely preventable.
The first is the anchor. A perfect lock on a sign post with nothing on top means the whole bike lifts off; a scaffold pole, a low bollard, a wooden fence, a bike rack that isn’t bolted down — all give the bike away without anyone touching the lock. The second is the parts. Quick-release wheels and seatpost clamps exist to be removed in seconds, and a thief who can’t take the bike will happily take the front wheel. What this means for what you buy and how you park
Read back through the list and a pattern emerges: three of the five attacks are answered by thickness and hardness, one is answered by leaving no space inside the shackle, and one is answered by a decent cylinder. The other pattern is that every defense is really a way of buying time in a place where time is expensive for the thief. Frequently asked questions
How do thieves typically attack grinder-resistant locks?
The same way they attack any lock, but with a power tool and a plan. A grinder attack needs the lock held steady and needs room for the disc to reach the metal, so a thief looks for a lock hanging loose, resting on the ground, or with wide open space inside the shackle. Diamond-rated locks are designed to make that harder - more hardened material to cut through, and shapes that give the disc less to bite on - so the attack takes longer, throws more sparks and draws more attention. That is what the rating buys: time and noise, not immunity.
Are heavier bike locks more secure?
Usually, but weight is a proxy rather than the thing itself. Heavier normally means thicker hardened steel, which is exactly what resists cutting - so within a category, the heavier lock is generally the stronger one. It stops being a useful guide across categories, though: a heavy chain of soft links is weaker than a lighter hardened U-lock, and a heavy lock you leave at home protects nothing at all. What is the most common way bikes get stolen?
Not a dramatic lock defeat - a bad lock or bad locking. Can thieves pick a bike lock?
It happens, but it is much rarer than cutting. Position the lock high on the frame, keep it clear of the ground, and fill as much of the shackle as you can with the frame, the rack and a wheel so there is no space to work in.
