How to Mount a Rear Bike Rack
Fitting a rear rack is a fifteen-minute job with a couple of hex keys, even on a frame without eyelets. Here's how to do it so the rack sits level and stays put.
A rear rack is the single most useful thing you can bolt to a commuter bike, and fitting one is far less daunting than it looks. For most bikes it’s a fifteen-minute job with a couple of hex keys. The part that trips people up isn’t the wrenching — it’s working out how the rack attaches to their particular frame, especially if that frame doesn’t have the little threaded holes racks are designed to bolt into. This guide walks through both cases: the easy frame-with-eyelets version, and what to do when your bike doesn’t have them.
First, find your mounting points
Before you buy or fit anything, look at your frame in two places. Down at the rear dropouts — where the wheel’s axle sits — check for small threaded holes, called eyelets. Then look higher up, near the top of the seat stays (the tubes running up to the seat), for a second pair of eyelets. A rack needs a lower and an upper anchor on each side. If you have both pairs, mounting is straightforward. If you have the lower pair but not the upper, or none at all, you’ll use an adapter — more on that below. Most modern commuter, hybrid and touring bikes have eyelets; many road bikes and some e-bikes don’t.
The tools you’ll need
- Hex (Allen) keys— a 4, 5 and 6 mm cover almost every rack bolt.
- The bolts and strutsthat came with the rack; don’t substitute random hardware for the supplied bolts.
- Thread-locker(optional but wise) — a drop keeps bolts from rattling loose over months of road vibration.
- A torque wrench(optional) — useful if your frame or the rack lists a torque figure, so you don’t overtighten a bolt.
Mounting a rack on a frame with eyelets
This is the common case and the easy one. Work in this order and you’ll end up with a level, rigid rack:
- Loosely attach the lower legs.Bolt the rack’s lower struts to the dropout eyelets, but leave the bolts finger-tight so the rack can still pivot.
- Attach the upper stays. Fix the adjustable upper stays to the seat-stay eyelets. Most racks have sliding or bendable stays so you can dial in the fit.
- Level the platform. Adjust the stays until the top platform sits level (or very slightly nose-up), so panniers hang straight and nothing slides forward.
- Check clearance.Confirm the rack clears the tire, the brake and any disc rotor, with a finger’s width to spare.
- Tighten in stages. Snug each bolt a little at a time, working around the rack so it stays square, then do a final firm tighten. Add thread-locker if the maker recommends it.
- Load-test it. Push down hard on the platform and try to twist the rack side to side. It should feel solid. Re-check the bolts after your first loaded ride.
No eyelets? Two ways around it
A frame without eyelets can still carry a rack — you just change how it anchors:
- Seatpost-mounted rack.These clamp around the seatpost instead of bolting to the frame, so they fit almost any bike. The trade-off is a lower weight limit than a frame-mounted rack, so check the rating and keep loads sensible — great for a bag and a change of clothes, less so for a full grocery haul.
- Eyelet adapters and P-clamps.An axle adapter adds mounting points at the rear wheel’s axle, and P-clamps (small rubber-lined metal loops) wrap the seat stays to give the upper stays something to bolt to. Fitted well, this gets a frame-style rack onto a frame that shipped without eyelets.

Disc-brake clearance: the detail to double-check
If your bike has rear disc brakes, the caliper sits low on the frame — right where a rack’s lower leg often wants to mount. Use a rack described as disc-brake compatible, and test-fit the lower legs before you commit: you want clearance between the rack, the caliper and the spinning rotor, with none of them touching under load. Sometimes a thin spacer or a slightly different mounting hole solves it. Never let a loaded pannier hang where it could swing into the rotor. When in doubt, a bike shop will fit a rack in a few minutes and confirm the clearance.
Common fitting problems, and how to fix them
Most rack-mounting headaches come down to a handful of recurring issues, and each has a simple fix:
- The platform sits nose-down or tail-down.The upper stays are set to the wrong length. Loosen them, level the top with the frame, and re-tighten — aim for level or a hair nose-up so bags hang straight.
- The rack rubs the tire.Either the rack is too low for your wheel size or the lower legs are set too far in. Many racks are height-adjustable for exactly this; raise it, or add a spacer, until there’s clear air around the tire even under load.
- It rattles on rough roads. A bolt has worked loose or was never fully snug. Go around every fastener, tighten evenly, and add a drop of thread-locker to the ones that keep backing out.
- The stays don’t reach the eyelets. Bikes vary, and sometimes the supplied stays are too short or too long. Most racks include adjustable or trimmable stays; if not, a P-clamp higher on the seat stay gives you a fresh anchor point.
Take the extra two minutes to solve these properly rather than riding on a rack that’s close-enough. A rack that rubs or rattles at the start only gets worse under a loaded pannier, and a loose one can shift mid-ride exactly when you least want it to.
Fit it yourself, or pay a shop?
For a frame with eyelets and a rack that matches it, self-fitting is genuinely easy and worth doing — you’ll understand your own setup and be able to re-check it whenever you like. Where a bike shop earns its small fee is the awkward cases: a frame without eyelets that needs adapters and P-clamps, a tight disc-brake clearance you’re not sure about, or a rack that doesn’t seem to want to fit at all. A mechanic has done it a hundred times, has a bin of spacers and adapters, and will confirm the clearance is safe under load. If you’re carrying anything heavy or valuable and you have any doubt, that peace of mind is cheap. There’s no shame in either route — the goal is a rack that stays rigid and clears everything, however it gets there.
Once it’s on
A properly mounted rack should be rock-solid — no wobble, no rattle, level on top. Re-check the bolts after the first loaded ride, since new hardware settles in, and again every few weeks for the first couple of months. Then it’s ready for the fun part: hanging panniers on it and learning to carry a full shop home without a car.
