Waterproof vs water resistant vs rain cover

These are three different promises. A fully welded roll-top bag — the Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic pair (40 L, listed fully waterproof) and the cheaper RockBros roll-top pair (up to 30 L) — has no zipper and no stitched seam for water to wick through, so it stays dry in a sustained downpour. A water-resistant bag with a taped body, like the Rhinowalk 27 L, handles heavy rain but isn’t built to be submerged. A bag that ships a rain cover, like the Ibera PakRak pair, is dry with the cover on and merely showerproof without it. None of that is a flaw — it is a spec to match to your climate. If you commute daily through wet winters, buy welded; if you see the odd shower, a rain cover is plenty.

Mounting is the other half of the decision. Ortlieb’s QL hooks click on and off in a second and hold on rough roads; Ibera’s clips are at their best on Ibera’s own PakRak racks; the RockBros and Rhinowalk use simpler hook hardware that fits most standard rails. How much can waterproof panniers carry?

It depends on whether you buy a pair or a single.
